Fred ANDERSON & Harrison BANKHEAD - The Great Vision Concert: rec 2003 live at the Vision Festival NYC CD Ayler ∫ Fred Anderson ts; Jarrison Bankhead b ∫ reviews - cadence 09.07, Jason Bivins: ... a fine live date ... when the mood strikes, there's little like that dark brooding that Anderson can sometimes achieve, perfectly partnered by Bankhead, whose lyrical playing seems midway between Hopkins and Haden ... they shadow each other perfectly, but not with tiresome mimicry - rather, they do so with deep sympathy and a shared vision ... the whole thing swings like hell, and people were dancing in the aisles. John Wolf BRENNAN - Zero Heroes: rec 2003, live at Vancouver Festival, Cda CD Leo Records ∫ Peggy Lee cel; John Wolf Brennan p; Dylan van der Schyff perc ∫ reviews - Greg Buium: Zero Heroes isn't some reckless piece of bravado. John Wolf Brennan just loves playing with words. Puns and puzzles and all sorts of poetic trickery seem second nature to him. Think of his song and CD titles maybe "Flarps & Shats" or "ConZENtration" or "Para.ph(r)ase" as a kind of shortcut into his musical mind. In part, it seems like a good bit of fun, but if you look a little closer you'll probably find something there to unpack: something shrewd and, often, quite telling. So it is with Zero Heroes, the name he's given to this astonishing trio performance, with cellist Peggy Lee and drummer Dylan van der Schyff, recorded in Vancouver in March 2002. Sure, the title rhymes. And, as Brennan told me, it's also a cryptic and timely reference to the world after September 11th. ("There is zero need for heroism in the American cowboy sense: shoot first, then think. No beating about the Bush here...") But Zero Heroes is, really, about the improviser's art: its impromptu events and matter-of-fact connections, its nuanced notion of freedom and nearly preternatural sense of form. And it's also about how we the audience listen ... ∫ soundclip ∫ J.W. Brennan

Still, amid the hommages, recreations, recontextualizations and outright grave robbing, I'm not sure anyone has approached Davis's music in quite the way Russell Gunn has done here: as instrumental pop. Gunn and his Elektrik Butterfly quartet eschew high-mindedness in favor of a fat bottom, motile rhythms, and a dance sensibility ... Orrin Evans plays his piano and electric keyboards (mostly Rhodes piano) with high rhythmic sensitivity, but he also has a nice sense of colour and an attentiveness of his instrument's history ... Gunn is crisp and extrovert, and thus honours his dedicatee's memory in a novel way: by having fun. Even in a crowded field of Miles tributes, that's nearly revolutionary / cadence 06.07 Jim Santella: Gunn plays open trumpet with electronic effects on "Plays Miles" in order to revisit the music of Miles' later period ... "Bitches Brew", with all of its echoing trumpet and solid rhythmic drive, has captured his heart solidly. More importantly, the one-of-a-kind pioneering attitude that Davis continued to bring to us throughout his ever-changing career has given Gunn the energy to look for new and different forms of expression. He experiments and he enjoys creative expression ... Gunn approaches this program with a gentle, open-trumpet passion. The lower registers turn out slightly above the pitch and any high-note blasts come in short bursts ... with him is a strong rhythm section that shares the groove exceptionally well ... Gunn has decided not to introduce new an radical concepts into this tribute session, he's instituted his own form of Funk and Blues into the program. He's come up with a fine tribute that emphasizes Davis' later period through the voice of a dedicated follower / JazzThing 05.07 ... Ben MONDER feat. Theo Bleckmann - At Night: : rec 2007 CD Songlines => weblink ∫ Ben Monder g; Theo Bleckman voice & live electronic processing; Satoshi Takeishi perc & electronics ∫ reviews - JazzThetik 10.07 **** / cadence 09.07, Marc Medwin: ... this album is a fascinating and ultimately successful trans-genre fauret into the mind-altering worlds between improvisation and composition ... the duo's aesthetic is clearly based in the interplay afforded by acoustic instruments-guitar, voice and, this time around, the meterless percussion rattlings usually associated with free Improv ... the disc is a refreshingly pure kind of fusion, and let's hope we don't have too wait another seven years for more! / DRS2, Jazz aktuell 01.05.07, Empfehlung Jürg Solothurnmann
Ted NASH & Still Evolved - In The Loop: rec 2006 CD Palmetto => weblink ∫ Ted Nash ts; Marcus Printup tp; Frank Kimbrough p; Ben Allison b; Matt Wilson dr ∫ Originals ∫ reviews - JazzThetik: In neun Stücken überzeugt Nash's Fünferbande mit einem ausgereiften modern Jazz mit ganz viel Seele / JazzThing 01.07: Was Ted Nash so unverwechselbar macht, ist neben seinen stupenden Fertigkeiten als multi-instrumentaler Holzbläser sein wie somnambules Gespür für Arrangements ... neun abgezockte und mit vielen doppelten Böden durchzogene Hardbop-Lektionen / DownBeat 12.06 **** / JazzThetik 10.06 **** / John Frederick Moore, Jazziz; In the Loop features nine original tunes inspired by his travels with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, commissions by the Zenon Dance Company in Minneapolis and Café Dupa, a restaurant where you can get a good caffeine fix and better dessert. Like Still Evolved, In the Loop promises to be "filled with plenty of little surprises." Für Liebhaber des gehobenen Mainstreams ist "In The Loop" und auch Ted Nash jedoch empfohlen / cadence Magazine recognized Ted as a Rising Star in the alto saxophone category in 2004, 2005, and 22006 as well as a Rising Star in the tenor saxophone category in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Still Evolved made the Best CD list in 2003 and the Best Jazz Album list in 2004.
