Stefano BOLLANI Trio - I'm In The Mood For Love: rec 2007  CD  Venus/EGEA  ∫ Stefano Bollani p; Ares Tavolazzi b; Walter Paoli dr ∫ reviews - Vertrieb: From Best New Talent in 1998 to Best Musician and Best Album of 2006 in Italy's Jazz Musica magazine polls, it is safe to say that Stefano Bollani's star is in the ascendancy. "I'm In The Mood For Love", recorded in 2006, is now available in Europe thanks to the exclusive license to Egea Music accorded by Venus Records. Bollani uses a colorful box of paints to create the eleven miniature musical canvases on this album. The pianist from Milan draws inspiration from, amongst others, the Gershwin, Glenn Miller, Fats Waller and Irving Berlin. Yet despite such diverse sources, there is a suite-like continuity to the album as a whole. A strong, unwavering melodic line characterizes each song and Bollani's classical touch is also felt throughout, whether on the beautiful "Moonlight Serenade" or on the breathtaking version of McHugh's "I'm In The Mood For Love". There is as much Alfred Brendel in Bollani's phrasing as there is Bill Evans. In an interview given in 2002 for Quotidiano.com, Bollani defended his eclecticism thus: "Who established where jazz music finishes and the rest begins? Who said that the jazz musician must be a damned poet, depressed and without a penny to his name? The point to value is whether or not he is making beautiful music". This album, a delight from start to finish, is his tribute to the mainstream classic jazz to date. The combination of virtuosity, originality of ideas, and sheer musicality in his playing on this album will surely go a long way to placing him amongst the very elite of today's jazz pianists.

A living legend in full-form / Audiophile Audition, Jeff Krow: Welcome back Hadley ... ****°  / All Music Guide, Adam Greenberg: For his first album as a leader in a couple of decades, Hadley Caliman returns with a bang. Though released by Seattle's Origin label, it's not strictly Northwest jazz, and though containing a couple of players from the California scenes, it's not strictly West Coast jazz. It's something different, tangible, with ties to the classics but explorations well into the new beyond. For someone who's played with everyone from Dexter Gordon to Santana, perhaps this shouldn't be surprising. The album opens with "Back for More," a new item from trumpeter Thomas Marriott with some nice parallel lines and a driving rhythm section. "This Is New" provides vibist Joe Locke with his first of many opportunities to stretch out on a good extended solo that does what few vibe players are apt to pull off in this era — maintain excitement while not succumbing to a pure show of force. By the time the album gets to "Invitation," there's a sense of Coltrane in Caliman's playing — not mimicry, but certainly some influence. "Comencio" takes advantage of a shiny Latin groove as a backdrop for more horn interaction between Caliman and Marriott and an excellent drum solo courtesy of Joe La Barbera. "If" comes from the San Francisco scene, and has a bit of the jazz club jam sound to it, but then lets Locke loose for a vibe extravaganza only matched by the groove in bassist Phil Sparks' extended solo. The album finishes off the way it started, with a delivery that promises more. The album is a fine one, rife with Caliman's obvious talent on the sax, but perhaps more so by the full supporting cast, each member of which gets plenty of time in the limelight, and makes it worthwhile. record

In ihrer quasi der Zeit entrückten Beschaffenheit beginnen sie dem gewillten Zuhörer auf einmal zu sprechen, vergleichbar zunächst rätselhaft entrückten archäologischen Grabungsfunden.

Nach drei aussergewöhnlichen Trio-Alben zeigt nun ihre erste Solo-Einspielung für ECM, was darunter zu verstehen ist. „Diese Aufnahme sollte eine in ihrer Gefühlswelt vollkommen authentische sein: ganz reduziert, ohne überflüssige Elemente, gleichzeitig aber von Herzen kommend. Was sich so leicht sagt, ist schwer zu erreichen, sogar in improvisierter Musik ergibt sich leicht ein gewisser Aktivismus, eine nervöse Energie. Rita Marcotulli, Nguyen Lê and their friends create, with personal and gut-wrenching methods, a musical world where Zappa's transgression and sense of irony meets with Thelonious Monk's rigid and merciless writings, forming a unique universe of sounds and a surprising and unexpected bridge between lost and separate memories in our minds. It all began with an idea a little perverse; to put together the music of Thelonious Monk and the orchestral genius of Frank Zappa. The musicians didn't want to make a cover record. They really thought that by bringing together the music of these two great gurus they could create a truly unique type of "zapping" containing all the music of the 20th century. In all of the compositions there's at least a small trace or an idea of Monk's style. In some cases his presence is clear cut in other cases its more subtle. Let's say it appears here and there throughout the whole record, a little like Forrest Gump.

Roll them down and slope separating twentieth and twenty-first century carioca, where samba, choro and baiao get caught up in their hair and get into the fibres of their clothes, then introduce them to Villa Lobos and Jobim, and you will have a rough but reasonable idea of what Guinga's music is all about. The three musicians with Guinga are the well known clarinet player Gabriele Mirabassi, plus Paulo Sergio Santos and Lula Galvao. Santos is one of the most beautiful-sounding clarinettist in the world, he was for many years soloist with the symphony orchestra in Rio and with the mythical Villa-Lobos Quintet, of which he is a founding member, and he later epitomised the rebirth of choro. And then there is Lula Galvao, a guitarist who could only have been produced in Brazil and who has the unique ability of being both a fantastic improviser in the purely jazz sense and also a leading exponent of the Brazilian school of guitar, which is admired all over the world. This CD features also the extraordinary trumpet player Jorginho do Trompete on some tracks. He is a virtuoso of his instrument and blows the horn like a killer. Der Schweizer vermeidet auf dem Saxophon peinlichst jede liebliche Grundierung. Kein Vibrato, keine anbiedernden Motive. Trotzdem spürt man in seinem Zusammenspiel mit dem Quartett H2S2 jede Menge lyrisch anrührende Momente. Das mag auch daran liegen, dass Hendriksens Spiel einsam und dabei leicht heimatlos wirkend durch Raum und Zeit mäandert. Immer auf der Suche nach adäquaten Ansprechpartnern und musikalisch herausfordernden Ideen. Die Basis hierfür findet er in den gut gewählten Kompositionen des Albums und in der kreativen Offenheit mit seinen Bandkollegen. In kooperativer Konzentration prüft Hendriksen gemeinsam mit dem Gitarristen Franz Hellmüller, dem Bassisten Luca Sisera und dem Schlagzeuger Michael Stulz die notierten Vorlagen auf deren Gehalt. Die Vier erforschen gleichzeitig Klänge und Töne, sie tauschen ihre Erfahrungen und Temperamente freigiebig aus und sie kommunizieren mal in einer akustisch verhaltenen, fragilen Musiksprache („Luzern-Lausanne“ von F.Hellmüller), mal in von kreativen Interaktionsschüben gezeichneten Gedanken und Techniken („Dance“ von Paul Motion). Great music demands that, even if the task is impossible. Milton Cordona - one of the world's best percussionists - is on this record. So above, so below: just as with Cardona, when you think you understand this music you quickly find that you don't. The more you listen the more simple songs become complex, and vice versa. So it's the classic creeper. It starts out compelling; demanding repeated listening but frankly difficult. No... not-easy. Before you know it it's joined the canon of your favourite unkillable music. I'd have the implant. So how does it, you know, sound? The art department of New York, Cuba and New Orleans, via Glasgow, Essouira and Palestine. Somewhere hot, that still understands the Northern winter. If you like jazz you'll understand the idiom - and if you like the best electronic music you'll also understand the idiom even though there's no obvious electronics. Rumba, not as a tourist attraction, but as a way of communicating with your city-bound brothers and sisters and your millennia-dead ancestors. Beautiful Scars is also a very, very sexy record. To engage Kip-speak, what I mean is: it's not bedroom music or an aide de seduction... Actually one can't - on the Beat BlaserC website - describe the specific tastes, pressure, use of tongues and the subsequent intrinsic angers, joys, regrets and delusions derived, which this record cannot help but embody. This is exactly what the record is about. That, and politics. The politics of global capital and exploitation. Not in your face, but because that's what the world itself is about and only a miniscule amount of musicians take it on. I mean, really take it on. Aficionados of Hanrahan's music will recognise this; even they will be surprised at how good this music is. You ask: how can this be so fresh? How can it make you see the world as if through the jangled, elated-but-weepy psyche of a world-class hangover, or PMT on the perfect summer's day? As the record says, a day when everything is in its perfect place but bosses still screw their subordinates and lovers go home unfulfilled? Tangled. Difficult. Exquisitely beautiful."

One of his trademarks has been to examine and illuminate the irregular edges of the jazz piano repertoire, as he does here ... along with original pieces that venture into peripheral terrain. But there’s an unexpected ingredient in the mix of Betwixt—his choice of instrument.

American bass player Jeff Denson received the Berklee Outstanding Performer Award in 2002. Born in Israel, Ziv Ravitz was the house drummer at Tel Aviv's Camelot Jazz Club and a recipient of the Zildjian Scholarship Award in 2003. In 2006 Minsarah received a German Record Critics Award for their outstanding album "Minsarah. "The cooperation between Lee Konitz and Trio Minsarah is not just a strike of big luck but the subsequent result of an obvious spiritual and artistical affinity. The saxophone player considers this young international trio the best and most inspiring accompanists he had in a long time. Evidently Minsarah's spontaneous, ever surprising ways of improvising as a trio are deeply related to Konitz' all-improvisational, non-repetitive musical concept. So "Deep Lee" is not just "a saxophone plus trio" but a quartet of individualists inspiring (and writing for) each other. It's the Konitz Principle, extended to band format. It's Lee as deep as Lee can get.

"Early Reflections" is another brilliant effort from the artist best known for his work with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, The Headhunters, and many others. Features a new version of Maupin's classic composition, "The Jewel in the Lotus." Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis' classic "Bitches Brew" album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as, "Big Fun" "Jack Johnson," and "On the Corner." He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock's seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock's influential Mwandishi band. Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute and, most notably, the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments. Upon moving to New York in 1962, he freelanced with groups led by Marion Brown, Pharoah Saunders, and Chick Corea, and played regularly with Roy Haynes and Horace Silver. He also recorded with McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan,  Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson, and Woody Shaw to name only a few. Maupin's own discography as a leader includes a well-received recording for ECM Records, "The Jewel in The Lotus" (1974), "Slow Traffic to the Right" (1976), "Moonscapes" both on Mercury Records (1978), and "Driving While Black" on Intuition, (1998). The instrumentation of Maupin's current group The Bennie Maupin Ensemble, harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios, such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. While echoes of the great John Coltrane can be heard in Maupin's work, one can also discern the influences of Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy, as well as Maupin's contemporaries like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Henderson. Maupin's approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment.  He maintains active performing and teaching careers in Europe, and the US. Bennie Maupin currently resides in the Los Angeles area.

... Sehr frische Musik, äusserst unterhaltend, lässt man sich erst einmal auf diese Art Ruinenbaumeisterei ein. «Als ich um elf auf die Uhr schaute, war es Viertel nach acht», schrieb Alfred Kerr einmal über eine langweilige Theateraufführung. Bei dieser CD verhält es sich umgekehrt.

Mengis' writing is enhanced by a line-up of characterful soloists. Stoffner's spacey, layered-chord solos on «Hide And Seek» and «Song For Violet» stick in the mind, as do Von Flue's smoky tenor on «Furry Buddy» and Escher's skronking alto on «Tomorrow Will Be Colder.» Mengis' nimble, laser-precise, skittering lyricism is compelling and delightful whenever it emerges from the ensemble...Ultimately, however, The Pond is a composer's album. That, like the finest classic Mingus, it sounds more like an epic head arrangement, gives it added allure.

Thomas Moeckel ist ganz offensichtlich Perfektionist, er und seine Band wirken jedoch nie stromlinienförmig oder gar banal, was bei Produktionen dieser stilistischen Ausrichtung leider nicht selten ist ... als Trompeter bzw. Flügelhornist steuert er einige hörenswerte Improvisationslinien bei ... das Repertoire der CD besteht aus harmonisch sehr eigen umgesetzten Titeln aus dem GAS sowie aus eigenen Themen, denen man ohne weiteres Ohrwurm-Qualitäten zusprechen darf ... in zwei Titeln kommt der Vokalist Moeckel zum Zug, der dem Vergleich zu real existierenden Jazzsängern wie z.B. Mark Murphy, David Linx oder Theo Bleckmann zwar nicht standhält, es wohl auch nicht Absicht war, in solche Konkurrenz zu treten; immerhin gibt seine angenehme Stimme eine andere klangliche Einfärbung der beiden Stücke ... der partielle Einsatz von hintergründigen Streichern ist - wie immer - eine Frage des Hörergeschmacks und auch bei dieser durchwegs erfreulichen Produktion nicht unbedingt zwingend, auch wenn sie zurückhaltend eingesetzt wurden und nicht gleich nach der Insulin-Spritze rufen ... alles in allem: empfohlen!
