Think Mussorgsky’s “Picture at an Exhibition” or even Scott Fields’ Clean Feed release “Beckett.” This CD by trombonist Michael Dessen and his trio continues the tradition. The disc is inspired by Pablo Neruda’s poem “Ars Poetica.” The album’s title (and of the first piece) is from one of the poem’s verses. These kinds of inspirations continue throughout the CD. “Chocolate Geometry” comes from Dessen's appreciation of the abstract and conceptual art of Mariángeles Soto-Diaz. “Anthesis” alludes to botanics, which is the flowering period of a plant. And “Granulorum,” even if the musician didn't consider it when writing this composition, reminds us of the miniature rice paintings of Korean traditional artists. This is one of the few Clean Feed editions that includes electronics; the computer is Dessen's second instrument. This example of electroacoustic jazz combines African-American traditions with 20th-century experimental techniques. Michael Dessen and his partners, Christopher Tordini on double bass and Tyshawn Sorey on percussion, work with strong collective sense on two planes, one temporal, with a flowing drive that enhances the nature of music as an art of time, and the other spatial, in a granular, organic way, transposing to the sound world characteristics associated with visual arts. Hans-Peter Pfammatter on the keyboard and Wolfgang Zwiauer on bass have been part of the group since the beginning. They create a range of sounds together with Doran, in which Bruno Amstad clearly and audibly feels at home. The latter is one of the best of his kind in Europe; hardly anyone has such a great variety of sounds and such an immense range of tones as he does. Describing the music is not easy, because it defies any simple categorization. Of course, improvisation is an elementary component, but clever and unique melody lines also wind across a solid, often rock music-like and funky groove. You can never be certain in which direction the rhythm and melody will go in the next moment; listening remains suspenseful on principle.

Something remained of the Sun Ra Arkestra and the Art Ensemble of Chicago fascinations for the Mother Continent and its rhythms. We can find it in this new project by Harris Eisenstadt, a Canadian ex-pat New York-based jazz drummer who had the opportunity to study in Gambia and Senegal with griot musicians. In Senegal he learned Sabar traditional drumming, used in parties and life-cycle events, and the sense of community Eisenstadt experienced in Dakar was transposed to the collective playing of this quintet with four horns, going deeply into the roots of jazz without being close-minded. Attracted to this music in his teenage years because of the “kind of transcendence going on” in John Coltrane and Miles Davis records with, respectively, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams holding the sticks, his references start in rock – Led Zeppelin, for instance – and include contemporary music composers like Charles Ives, Toru Takemitsu and Gyorgy Ligeti. Now he's involved in creative music, and one of his life achievements was playing in a trio with a historic figure of this tendency, Sam Rivers. An enthusiast of the Do It Yourself aesthetics, Harris Eisenstadt has in Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet, flugelhorn), Nate Wooley (trumpet), Mark Taylor (french horn) and Josh Sinton (baritone saxophone) equal believers in the principle “do what you do and believe in it no matter what”, as he said in an interview. It is "the single most beautiful voice I have ever heard," says Hungarian opera singer Anna Korsek. Fayrouz, also: Fairuz (means "turquoise", birth name: Nouhad Haddad), is worshipped by millions of fans worldwide. Hailed as "our ambassador to the stars" and "poet of the voice", her popularity in the Arabic music world is still unmatched. After being introduced to the Rahbani Brothers (Assi and Mansour Rahbani) in the early 1950s, the singer gave her first large-scale concert at the Baalbeck International Festival in 1957 that launched her career as "First Lady of Lebanese singing". "To the Arab world Fayrouz came suddenly, as a miracle. Arabic music has never been the same since," says Jabra Ibrahim Jabra. Following her North American tour in 1971 her fame became international. Fayrouz has performed in many Arabic countries as well as in Europe, Australia and the Americas. While keeping in her repertoire hundreds of songs by the Rahbani Brothers, she started a new cooperation in the 1980s working exclusively with her son, composer Ziad Rahbani. Seine Lebensgeschichte bildet eine einzigartige Story, die eng mit den globalen Geschicken des 20. Jahrhunderts verbunden ist. Für sein neues Album setzte sich Abdullah solo ans Piano. You can't get fresher ideas than these. The instrumentation is the typical one in acoustic improvised music, the reeds-double bass-percussion formula in hard bop, free jazz and free bop, but there's nothing typical in what this troupe usually does, even because sometimes they sound... electronic. The motive may reside in the personal experiences of the three musicians coming from Michigan, very far from what's usually done in New York and Chicago, the two most important capitals of the American modern and avant-garde jazz ? they were or are presently involved, at the same time, with non-aligned rock bands and musicians like His Name Is Alive, Neil Michael Hagerty, Tara Jane O'Neil, Saturday Looks Good To Me and Low, and very well known experimentalists active in different fields, Anthony Braxton, Jim O'Rourke, Tony Conrad and Alvin Lucier, among others. They have also collaborated with the likes of Ken Vandermark, Rob Mazurek, Scott Rosenberg, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Greg Kelly and Jim Baker to name a few.  MTS engages in free music without the turbulent side of it, and usually with a chamber-like or an ambient (yes, with drones) approach, always with surprising developments. It's Bauder, Wallace and Siegel alone we find in “In Former Times”, and what they do is more than enough to conclude that they're changing the frontiers of jazz. It happens again, and that signifies just one thing: the future of this music language is under construction. Executed by tuba, cello, oud, mandolin, a Bulgarian choir and a multitude of electronic and acoustic percussion from which Miyake extracts the most curious of sounds, there is only one conclusion to come to : for whoever likes the melting of contrasts, who likes Tom Waits, David Sylvian or Chet Baker, should absolutely listen to “Stolen from Strangers”. The protagonist Jun Miyake and his accolyte Arto Lindsay take a good portion of creative freedom.
