Fred ANDERSON / Hamid DRAKE - From The River To The Ocean: rec 2007 CD Thrill Jockey: weblink => "labels" ∫ Fred Anderson ts; Hamid Drake dr ∫ reviews - DownBeat 06.07 **** / Label: Fred Anderson ist nicht einfach ein weiterer Musiker. ∫ genre: impro

Honing her chops in the legendary Albert Collins' band, the Icebreakers, the guitarist/singer/songwriter has been fronting her own powerful blues units over the course of seven critically-acclaimed releases. All I Found, her eighth outing as frontwoman, finds Davies at the top of her game on an album of eleven all-original tracks co-written with longtime songwriting partner Don Costagno. The backing unit, featuring an all-star cast of Arthur Neilson (second guitar), Bruce Katz (keyboards) and the quintessential blues rhythm section of Noel Neal (bass) and Per Hanson (drums), provides the perfect foundation for Davies' distinctive and articulate guitar playing and the most emotive vocals of her career. One of only a few female guitar players with a Fender endorsement, Davies has been nominated seven times for W. C. Handy Awards and won the Handy Award for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist in 1997

Less is more ! ∫ genre: contemporary

Friedli keeps the back-beat strong and the percussionj interesting ... Grunewald is a talented composer and more than adequate on his saxophone ... boviously, he has handpicked a group of players who are as excellent and talented as he is himself .. That's what makes this recording so enjoyable ... they demand that their own outstanding voicesebe heard not only individually, but as a tight, sparkling unit. Steve LACY - Master Of The Soprano Sax: DVD Efor Films ∫ Steve Lacy (ss), Irene Aebi (voc, vio), Steve Potts (as), Bobby Few (p), Jean-Jacques Avenel (b), Oliver Johnson (dr) ∫ reviews - Label: This indispensable DVD offers one of the most interesting films ever made about a modern experimental jazz pioneering. The star is Steve Lacy, the soprano sax innovator, talking about his musical concepts and his major influences from Sidney Bechet to John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Gil Evans and Thelonious Monk, who showed him the way to "lift the bandstand." The film presents clips of all these artists who delineates the human inspirations behind Lacy's processing of sly wit, precise abstraction, and mystical method. He's revealed as a sort of post-modern modernist whose present music can sing while it's laughing at itself crying. "Lacy shows how jazz continually becomes world music . . . That makes for a video that gives more and more, a real investment." - Kevin Lynch, DownBeat ∫ genre: contemporary

Andrew LAMB - Pilgrimage: rec 2003 CD CIMP: weblink => "labels" ∫ Andrew Lamb (tenor sax, mismaar); Tom Abbs (tuba, bass); Andrei Strobert (drums) ∫ reviews - Surprisingly, this is only Andrew Lamb's second recording as a leader, his first and stylistically more straight-ahead debut having been recorded in 1994 for Delmark Records. Those who have followed Lamb's career appreciate his ability to perform equally well in different genres. The marvelous trio he leads here finds his big, burly tone fronting the unlikely combination of tuba and drums in a mostly free-style romp that nonetheless incorporates a surprisingly broad palette. The saxophonist's swashbuckling voice reveals aspects of some of the older tenor giants such as Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins, but Lamb immerses his hardboiled playing in a more open framework. The best moments are when the rhythm duo spurs him on, as with the opening number, "Ludicrous Ridiculous." Sometimes, the tuba (or bass) and drums seem slightly muddy in the mix, perhaps a result of playing without a piano, and when Lamb drops out, everything becomes more subdued. Lamb acquits himself well as a composer, with attractive, original themes. The titles of tunes such as "Circus Avenue" and The Adventures of a Trained Brush" attest to his sense of humor and breadth of background, while the illusions to religious themes (for example, "The Pilgrimage" and "Harvest of Sorts") express a deeply felt spiritual yearning. Lamb's detailed liner notes describe a serious musician seeking to uplift his soul through art, and, like John Coltrane and his progeny, Lamb's vehicle is the psalm-like expression of his tenor saxophone. That the results reflect his quest testify to his musical abilities, enormous potential, and depth of character. ~ Steven Loewy, All Music Guide

- Tom Gsteiger ∫ genre: contemporary

Hubert NUSS - Feed The Birds: rec 2005 CD Pi Recordings: weblink => "labels" ∫ Hubert Nuss p; John Goldsby b; John Riley dr ∫ reviews - Label: Born in 1964, Hubert Nuss studied classical piano in Trossingen, Germany, followed by intense jazz studies at the "Cologne School of the Arts" where he got tuition from the great John Taylor. Nuss is one of the finest examples, that there is a new generation of European jazz piano players who are very dedicated in developing their "own thing", at the same time having a lot of respect for the tradition and roots of the so called "Afro-American" Jazz music. He is one of the most in demand players in Germany, works a lot with the NDR and WDR Radio Big bands and teaches at the "School of the Arts" in both Cologne and Berlin. "There is so much different trio music - as there are many different trios", Hubert Nuss says, knowing that this implies you have to find your own sound, your own stylistic statement, musical substance which makes you different from other piano trio formats. One of the biggest challenges for Nuss - and this becomes obvious immediately - is harmony. French composer Olivier Messiaen, one of the most important classical composers of the last century, has deeply inspired Nuss' playing and writing in the last couple of years.

Our four CDs edition is really complete, insofar that it includes some titles that are not included in other similar editions: 1) one track from a session recorded at Carnegie Hall; 2) three tracks from the two first Parker's sessions with Machito's big band; 3) two from a session for a J.A.T.P. movie with Coleman Hawkins, possibily recorded in the famous Gjon Mili's studio; 4) the famous "Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite" divided in six parts "Canción, Mambo part 1-2, Rhumba Abierta, 6/8, Jazz" , with Charlie Parker, Flip Phillips and Buddy Rich as soloists; 5) and finally, the four tracks from the legendary "Jam Session" date.

I was left with no particular desire to revisit this work / William Parker 2006: The first time I met Percy Heath was 1983 in San Francisco. I was playing a concert with the pianist Cecil Taylor and when the concert ended, I went off stage and there standing in the wings was Percy Heath. He greeted me with a hug and called me “Iron fingers”. I thanked him for his wonderful bass playing. Then we spoke about the importance of space, timing and playing the right thing at the right time in a musical situation. I saw Percy one other time at the North Sea Festival in Holland. He was in his seventies and I asked him if I could get anything for him. He replied “No, just keep playing your music”. In May 2005 The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra premiered the piece “For Percy Heath”.

Edwards: This follow up is a strong one, showing a tightly knit discipline combined with fully communicative freedom and fire. Very few free groups can manage that and there is certain classical free quality in play on this dix. Every piece has a trajectory and no musical time is spent idling. I am reminded in that way of some of the early Don Cherry records - every moment counted. So here. Swell an Mateen like to soar above the chaotic thrashing rhythm section to concentrate the energy level to higher intensity, but it's never the feeling of the same old thing over and over - they hold attention with musicality and control of sound. That, at least in part, is what effective free playing is all about. Remember Now is about as good an example that you'll likely to hear this year.
